  1. Remove the Restraint Control Module (RCM). See Restraint Control Module (Remove and Install).
  2. Connect the EDR extraction harness connectors (x2) to the RCM.
    Tip
Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • EDR extraction harness, RCM, Bosch MS-M3-MY - 1492139-00-B
  3. Connect the EDR extraction harness connector to the PCAN USB to CAN adapter connector.
    Tip
Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • PCAN USB to CAN adapter - 1016990-00-A
  4. Connect the PCAN USB to CAN adapter dongle connector to the laptop USB port.
  5. Connect the XP-20 (heavy duty) jump start 12V power to the EDR extraction harness.
    Note
    Jump start, XP-20 (heavy duty) - 1016990-00-A
  6. Open the Tesla EDR Retrieval Program.
    Note
The program will automatically try to connect to RCM and will display a green circle in the lower left corner when connected.
  7. Once the Tesla EDR Retrieval Program connection is established, click "Run EDR Retrieval", and then follow the on-screen prompts to retrieve and save the EDR data.
  8. Use the retrieved data to "Generate a Report". See https://edr.tesla.com.
    Note
EDR retrieval time will vary based on the user and retrieved data.
  9. Close the Tesla EDR Retrieval Program.
    Note
Select "X" at the top right of the window to close the program once EDR retrieval is complete.
  10. Disconnect the XP-20 (heavy duty) jump start 12V power from the EDR extraction harness.
  11. Disconnect the PCAN USB to CAN adapter dongle connector from the laptop USB port.
  12. Disconnect the EDR extraction harness connector from the PCAN USB to CAN adapter connector.
  13. Disconnect the EDR extraction harness connectors (x2) from the RCM.
  14. Install the RCM. See Restraint Control Module (Remove and Install).

Establish an In-Vehicle Connection (OBD2 Port)

  1. Open the LH front door.
  2. Lower the LH front window.
  3. Connect the OBD2 diagnostics cable to the PCAN-USB adapter.
    Tip
Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • OBD2 Diagnostics Cable - 2077826-00-A
    • PCAN-USB Adapter - 1016990-00-A
  4. Connect the OBD2 diagnostics cable to the vehicle's OBD2 port.
  5. Connect the PCAN-USB adapter to the laptop USB port.
  6. Open the Tesla EDR Retrieval Program. The program automatically attempts to connect to the RCM.
    Note
When connected properly, a green circle and the message “Connected to RCM” displays on the bottom left corner of the window.
  7. Once connected to the EDR, click “Run EDR Retrieval” and follow the on-screen prompts to retrieve and save EDR data.
  8. The retrieved *.edr data file can be used to generate a Tesla EDR Report at https://edr.tesla.com.
  9. Close the Tesla EDR Retrieval Program.
  10. Disconnect the PCAN-USB adapter from the laptop USB port.
  11. Disconnect the OBD2 diagnostics cable from the vehicle's OBD2 port.
  12. Disconnect the OBD2 diagnostics cable from the PCAN-USB adapter.
  13. Raise the LH front window.
  14. Close the LH front door.

Establish an In-Vehicle Connection (CAN Breakout Port)

  1. Open the RH front door and lower the RH front window.
  2. Move the RH front seat backward.
  3. Remove the RH lower A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Lower - LH (Remove and Replace).
