Electrical Steering Column - LHD (Remove and Replace)

CAUTION

Reuse

Remove

  1. Open the LH front door, lower the LH front window, and move the LH front seat backward.
  2. On the touchscreen, tap Controls > Steering, and use the left scroll wheel to adjust the steering column fully outward and fully downward.
  3. Disconnect the LV battery power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect) (Modify).
  4. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  5. Remove the LH instrument panel end cap. See Instrument Panel - End Cap - Substrate - LH (Remove and Replace).
  6. Where fitted: remove the LH knee air bag. See Knee Airbag - LH (Remove and Replace).
  7. Remove the instrument panel lower assembly. See Assembly - Instrument Panel - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  8. Remove the LH footwell duct. See Footwell Duct - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  9. Remove the steering column control module. See Steering Column Control Module (Remove and Install).
  10. Remove the screws (x4) that attach the instrument panel assembly to the cross car beam on the lower LH side.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T20 socket
  11. Remove the steering column lower gap hider. See Gap Hider - Steering Column - Lower (Remove and Replace)
  12. Remove the steering column upper gap hider. See Instrument Panel Steering Column Upper Gap Hider (Remove and Replace).
  13. Release the steering shaft boot from the bulkhead and pull it into the vehicle.
    Tip
    Release from one point, then work the boot off of the bulkhead.
  14. Remove and discard the bolt that secures the steering gear assembly to the electric steering column.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm deep socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  15. Slide the electric steering column upward to remove it from the steering gear assembly.
    Tip
    Wiggle or use a dead blow hammer to help separate as needed.
  16. Remove the upper and lower nuts (x4) that attach the steering column to the cross car beam.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm deep socket
    • 3/8 inch ratchet with rotary disc changeover RTCH-REV-3/8IN-72TEETH-L175MM ZEBRA
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
  17. Release the clip, and disconnect the IP harness connector from the electronic steering column.
  18. With assistance, carefully maneuver the steering column to remove it from the vehicle.
    CAUTION
    Avoid contact with surrounding components and do not apply excessive force to prevent instrument panel damage.
    Note
    Slightly pull the instrument panel outward to gain extra access for the steering column removal.
    Note
    Confirm that the steering wheel column motor is not blocked by the plastic beam on the instrument panel.

Install

  1. With assistance, position the steering column through the instrument panel and into place for installation.
    Note
    Position the steering column upside down to avoid motor from getting stuck on the plastic beam. Rotate the steering column clockwise for connector installation.
    Note
    Ask for assistance to install the steering shaft as needed.
    Note
    Do not apply excessive force to prevent instrument panel damage.
  2. Connect the IP harness connector to the electronic steering column, and then install the clip.
  3. Install the upper and lower nuts (x4) that attach the steering column to the cross car beam.
    15 Nm (11.1 lbs-ft)
    Note
    Make sure that the steering column control module is properly seated.
    • 13 mm deep socket
    • 3/8 inch ratchet with rotary disc changeover RTCH-REV-3/8IN-72TEETH-L175MM ZEBRA
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
  4. Slide the intermediate shaft assembly downward to install it onto the steering gear assembly.
    Note
    Ensure the intermediate shaft is properly aligned and fully seated.
  5. Install a new bolt that secures the intermediate shaft assembly to the steering gear assembly.
    18 Nm (13.3 lbs-ft)
    Note
    Make sure that the steering column control module is properly seated.
    • 13 mm deep socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  6. Secure the steering shaft boot into position on the bulkhead.
  7. Install the steering column upper gap hider. See Instrument Panel Steering Column Upper Gap Hider (Remove and Replace).
  8. Install the steering column lower gap hider. See Gap Hider - Steering Column - Lower (Remove and Replace)
  9. Install the screws (x4) that attach the instrument panel assembly to the cross car beam on the lower LH side.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T20 socket
  10. Install the steering column control module. See Steering Column Control Module (Remove and Install).
  11. Install the LH footwell duct. See Footwell Duct - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  12. Install the instrument panel lower assembly. See Assembly - Instrument Panel - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  13. Where fitted: install the LH knee air bag. See Knee Airbag - LH (Remove and Replace).
  14. Install the LH instrument panel end cap. See Instrument Panel - End Cap - Substrate - LH (Remove and Replace).
  15. Connect the LV battery power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect) (Modify).
  16. Unlock vehicle gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
  17. Run PROC_STEERING_COLUMN_CALIBRATIONvia Service Mode:Chassis ➜ Steering ➜ Calibrate Steering Columnvia Toolbox:(link).
  18. Exit Service Mode.
  19. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  20. Adjust the steering column back to its original position.
  21. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
