Clean Brake Calipers - Front (RWD) (Wheels Removed)

Special Tools required for this procedure
  • 1082171-10-A S-HOOK, BRAKE CALIPER (preferred)
  • 1082171-00-A S-HOOK, BRAKE CALIPER (if 1082171-10-A is not available)
Warning
Wear respiratory protective equipment in addition to standard personal protective equipment when servicing brake components.
Note
If the brake pads/rotors have worn to the point of replacement, or the condition of the pads/rotors is such that safety is affected, replace the pads/rotors. Clean other brake components as instructed.
Note
This procedure assumes the wheels are already removed from the vehicle. If this procedure is carried out as a stand-alone procedure, add correction code 34012501 as a separate correction within the same activity to the Service Visit.

Procedure

  1. Open the hood.
  2. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Put absorbent material underneath the brake fluid reservoir.
  4. Clean the area around the brake fluid reservoir and remove the brake reservoir cap.
  5. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the knuckle.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  6. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front brake caliper to the LH front knuckle, and then hang the caliper off to the side with an S-hook.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  7. Use a nylon brush and brake cleaner to clean the abutment clips and anti-rattle springs of the front brake caliper.
    CAUTION
    The brake caliper should not be disassembled.
    CAUTION
    Do not apply grease to any part of the brake caliper or brake pads.
    Note
    Allow 1 minute to dry after cleaning.
  8. Install new bolts (x2) that attach the LH front brake caliper to the LH front knuckle.
    94 Nm (69.3 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  9. Install the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the knuckle.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  10. Repeat step 5 to step 9 for the RH front brake caliper.
  11. Press the brake pedal several times to verify proper feel and action.
  12. Check the brake fluid level and top off if necessary.
  13. Install the brake reservoir cap.
  14. Remove the absorbent material from underneath the brake fluid reservoir.
  15. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  16. Continue with the procedure for which the wheels were removed (if applicable).
  17. After service to the vehicle is complete, perform a test drive and make sure that proper brake pedal feel and brake performance is achieved.
    Note
    Add the correction code for the post-repair validation test drive 00040100 as a separate activity to the Service Visit.
