Rear Subframe (Remove and Replace)

Reuse

Remove

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2-Post Lift.
  2. Open all four doors and lower all four windows.
  3. Move both front seats forward.
    Note
    Adjust the seat back if needed to avoid contacting headliner.
  4. Place the vehicle in Service Mode by using the touchscreen. See Service Mode.
  5. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
  6. On the touchscreen, tap the Service Mode "wrench" (at the bottom of the touchscreen UI), and then tap Thermal > Coolant System > Coolant Fill/Drain, click Run, and then allow the routine to complete.
  7. While holding the brake pedal, tap the Service Mode "wrench" at the bottom of the touchscreen UI, and then tap Chassis > Brakes > EPB Service Mode, select BOTH in the Action target dropping list, and select START in the Action type dropping list. Click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  8. Perform vehicle HV disablement procedure. See Vehicle HV Disablement Procedure.
  9. Remove the LH and RH rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  10. Remove the LH and RH rear suspension aero covers. See Rear Suspension Cover - LH (Remove and Replace).
  11. Remove the rear fascia diffuser. See Diffuser - Rear Fascia (Remove and Replace).
  12. Remove the nut that attaches the RDU ground strap to the body.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Socket 1/4in Dr. 12pt. Deep x 10mm
  13. Remove the rear stabilizer bar. See Rear Stabilizer Bar and Links - Stabar - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  14. Release the locking tab, then disconnect the RH subframe harness connector.
  15. Release the RH subframe harness clip from body.
  16. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear caliper to the LH rear knuckle, remove the caliper from the knuckle, and allow the caliper to hang from an S-hook.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • E18 Torx Low Profile Socket
  17. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the RH rear caliper to the RH rear knuckle, remove the caliper from the knuckle, and allow the caliper to hang from an S-hook.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • E18 Torx Low Profile Socket
  18. Remove the rear skid plate. See Skid Plate - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  19. Install the spring compressor onto the LH and RH rear coil springs.
    Note
    Compressor plates are installed one way. Top plate has notches, while lower plate does not. Reference photos for clarification.
  20. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear damper to the LH rear lower aft link.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  21. Repeat step 20 for the RH side.
  22. Position the coolant drain container under the LH rear of the vehicle.
  23. Release the spring clip to disconnect the RDU inverter inlet hose from the PCS outlet hose coupling.
    Note
    • The connection is located at the LH rear of the HV battery.
    • Install the plugs (x2) once disconnected.
    • Coolant loss greater than 1 L will require vacuum fill.
    • If the battery is returned to Reman, please remove the special tool plug.
  24. Release the push clips (x2) that attach the RH rear wheel liner to the rocker panel, then move the liner aside for access.
  25. Position the coolant drain container underneath the RH rear of HV battery.
  26. Release the spring clip to disconnect the coolant outlet hose from the rear return hose.
    Note
    • Install the plugs (x2) once disconnected.
    • Coolant loss greater than 1 L will require vacuum fill.
    • Use shop towel to clean any residue coolant inside the RH rocket panel if necessary.
    • If the battery is returned to Reman, please remove the special tool plug.
  27. Release the clip that attaches the coolant hoses to the RH shear plate.
  28. Remove the coolant drain container from underneath the vehicle.
  29. Remove the nut that attaches the RDU HV cable bracket to the HV battery.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • SOCKET, 1/4" DR., DEEP, MAGNETIC, 10MM
  30. Put on HV insulating gloves and leather over gloves.
  31. Disconnect the RDU HV cable from the HV battery.
    Note
    Release the locking tab and rotate the release lever up to disengage the connector. Do not force the release lever up. Ensure the alignment tabs on the RDU header are not damaged,
  32. Remove the leather over gloves and HV insulating gloves.
  33. Place the subframe lifting tool into position underneath the rear subframe.
  34. Connect the air supply to the subframe lifting tool.
  35. With assistance, raise the subframe lifting tool to support the rear subframe.
    Note
    • Attach the metal hooks at the end of the straps to rings on the subframe lifting tool.
    • Lower the vehicle if necessary.
  36. Remove the LH and RH shear plates. See Shear Plate - Rear Subframe - LH (Remove and Replace).
  37. Remove the rear subframe brace. See Brace - Rear Subframe (Remove and Replace).
  38. With assistance, lower the subframe lifting tool to remove the subframe and rear drive unit assembly from the vehicle.
    Note
    Use caution to not damage the components while lowering the subframe.
  39. Disconnect the air supply from the subframe lifting tool.
  40. With assistance, position the subframe lifting tool and subframe away from the vehicle.
  41. Disconnect the rear drive unit logic connector, and move the connector aside.
    Note
    Prevent coolant ingress into the connector.
  42. Release the rear drive unit logic connector clip.
  43. Release the clips (x2) and disconnect the resolver connector from the rear drive unit.
  44. Pull the red tab to disengage the lock, and then pull again to release and disconnect the oil pump connector.
    Note
    Do not push down on the red tab.
  45. Release the clip that attaches the rear drive unit ground strap cable to the subframe.
  46. Position the support stand underneath the LH rear lower aft link and raise the stand until the link is fully supported.
  47. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear lower fore link to the subframe.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm socket
  48. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear upper fore link to the subframe.
    Note
    Turn the bolt a few times to feed the end out while maneuvering the upper fore link to allow just enough space to remove the link from the rear subframe.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm combination wrench
    • 18 mm socket
  49. Remove the bolt, gasket and nut that attach the LH rear toe link to the subframe.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm deep socket
    • 18mm 12pt combination wrench
  50. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear lower aft link to the rear subframe.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
    • 21 mm combination wrench
  51. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear upper aft link to the subframe.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm combination wrench
    • 21 mm socket
  52. Remove the LH rear wheel speed sensor harness connector clip from the subframe.
  53. Disconnect the LH rear wheel speed sensor connector.
    Note
    Disengage the locking tab, hold the connector end on the subframe harness with your hands, and then release the connector clip using a pocket screwdriver.
  54. Remove the LH rear wheel speed sensor harness retainer clip from the subframe.
  55. Release the LH rear halfshaft from the rear drive unit.
    Note
    • To avoid damage to the halfshaft boots and oil seals, use caution when removing.
    • Recommend assistance to prevent the rear suspension system from falling.
  56. Remove the LH rear suspension assembly from the rear subframe.
    Note
    Recommend assistance to prevent the rear suspension system from falling.
  57. Repeat from step 46 to 56 to remove the RH rear suspension assembly.
  58. Position the rear subframe and drive unit assembly under the gantry.
  59. Attach the drive unit sling tool to the rear drive unit using the hooks (x3).
  60. Secure the drive unit sling to the gantry.
  61. Raise the sling until the cables have slight tension to ensure a secure connection.
  62. Remove the bolts (x3) that attach the LH, RH, and rear of the drive unit to the subframe.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Socket 3/8in Dr. 6pt. Std. x 18mm
  63. Lift the rear drive unit upwards from the rear subframe.
    Note
    Recommend assistance; take care not to damage other components.
  64. Position an empty drive unit crate below the rear drive unit for safe lowering.
    Note
    Use a pallet if no crate is available.
  65. Release the clips (x8) that attach the subframe harness to the top of the rear subframe, then remove the harness from the subframe.
  66. Detach the straps (x3) that attach the rear subframe to the lifting tool.
    Note
    Recommend assistance to prevent the subframe from falling.

Replace

  1. Install the rear subframe onto the lifting tool and secure it with straps (x3).
    Note
    Recommend assistance to prevent the subframe from falling.
  2. Route the rear subframe harness onto the rear subframe, and install the clips (x8) that attach the harness to the top of the subframe.
  3. Raise the rear drive unit and position it above the subframe.
    Note
    Recommend assistance.
  4. Lower the sling to install the rear drive unit into the rear subframe.
    Note
    Recommend assistance; take care not to damage other components.
  5. Loosely install the bolts (x3) that attach the rear, RH, and LH of the drive unit to the subframe.
    Note
    Torque at a later step.
  6. Lower the sling to release tension on the cables.
  7. Torque the bolts (x3) that attach the rear, RH, and LH of the drive unit to the subframe.
    80 Nm (59.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Socket 3/8in Dr. 6pt. Std. x 18mm
  8. Detach the hooks (x3), then release the drive unit sling tool from the rear drive unit.
  9. Move the rear subframe and drive unit assembly away from under the gantry.
  10. Position the support stand underneath the LH rear lower aft link to install the LH rear suspension assembly to the rear subframe.
    Note
    Recommend assistance to prevent the rear suspension system from falling.
  11. Install the LH rear halfshaft into the rear drive unit.
    1. Carefully push the LH rear halfshaft to the rear drive unit until an audible "click" is heard from the stub contacting the pinion shaft.
    2. Feel the slight pull as the circlip locks, then pull the inner halfshaft cup to confirm that the circlip is secured.
    Note
    Recommend assistance. Avoid damage to the axle seal during installation.
  12. Install the LH rear wheel speed sensor harness retainer clip to the subframe.
  13. Connect the LH rear wheel speed sensor connector.
    Note
    Engage the locking tab. Use hands to hold the connector end on the subframe harness.
  14. Install the LH rear wheel speed sensor harness connector clip to the subframe.
  15. Position the LH rear upper aft link onto the subframe, and then install and hand-tighten the bolt and nut.
    Note
    Make sure that the tab points vertically to the ground.
  16. Install the LH rear upper fore link to the subframe and hand-tighten the nut and bolt.
    CAUTION
    Do not force the bolt into position. Turn the bolt a few times to align while maneuvering the link.
    Note
    Make sure the “TOP” is pointing upwards.
  17. Install the LH rear lower aft link to the rear subframe, then install and hand-tighten the bolt and nut that attach the link to the subframe.
    Note
    The step of tightening this bolt is included in the installation of the LH rear suspension spring.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
    • 21 mm combination wrench
  18. Position the LH rear toe link onto the subframe, and then install and hand-tighten the bolt, gasket and nut.
    Tip
    Recommend assistance when performing this step.
  19. Position the LH rear lower fore link onto the subframe, and then install and hand-tighten the bolt and nut.
  20. Remove the support stand from underneath the LH rear suspension.
  21. Repeat from step 10 to 20 to install the RH rear suspension assembly.
  22. Secure the clip that attaches the rear drive unit ground strap cable to the subframe.
  23. Connect the oil pump connector.
  24. Secure the clips (x2) and connect the resolver connector to the rear drive unit.
  25. Secure the rear drive unit logic connector clip.
  26. Connect the rear drive unit logic connector.
    Note
    Verify that there is no coolant ingress in the connector.
  27. Connect the air supply to the subframe lifting tool.
  28. Position the subframe and rear drive unit assembly underneath the vehicle.
  29. With assistance, raise the rear drive unit and subframe assembly into position.
    Note
    Use caution to not damage the components while raising the subframe.
  30. Install the rear subframe brace. See Brace - Rear Subframe (Remove and Replace).
  31. Install the LH and RH shear plates. See Shear Plate - Rear Subframe - LH (Remove and Replace).
  32. Lower the rear subframe lifting tool from the vehicle, then remove the yellow safety straps (x3) from the subframe.
  33. Disconnect the air supply from the subframe lifting tool.
  34. Remove the subframe lifting tool from underneath the vehicle.
  35. Position the support stand underneath the LH rear lower aft link.
  36. Hand-tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear damper to the LH rear lower aft link.
  37. Remove the support stand from the LH rear suspension.
  38. Repeat from step 35 to step 37 for the RH side.
  39. Put on HV insulating gloves and leather over gloves.
  40. Connect the RDU HV cable to the HV battery.
    Note
    Make sure the connector lock is 90 degrees from the connector before beginning to secure the connector. Use one hand to support the connector while other latching the locking tab. Once installed, Verify that the latch is not damaged and fully secured in the latched position.
  41. Install the nut that attaches the RDU HV cable bracket to the HV battery.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • SOCKET, 1/4" DR., DEEP, MAGNETIC, 10MM
  42. Remove leather over gloves and HV insulating gloves.
  43. Position the coolant drain container underneath the RH rear of the HV battery.
  44. Secure the clip that attaches the coolant hoses to the RH shear plate.
  45. Remove the hose plugs (x2) and connect the coolant outlet hose to the rear return hose.
    Note
    • Perform a push-pull-push test to make sure the hose is fully seated. Do not wiggle the hose at the connection.
    • Use shop towel to clean any coolant residue if necessary.
    • Loss of coolant greater than 1 L requires coolant vacuum fill.
  46. Secure the push clips (x2) that attach the RH rear wheel liner to the rocker panel.
  47. Position the coolant drain container underneath the LH rear of the vehicle.
  48. Remove the plugs (x2) and connect the RDU inverter inlet hose to the rear of the HV battery.
    Note
    • Perform a push-pull-push test to make sure the hose is fully seated. Do not wiggle the hose at the connection.
    • Use shop towel to clean any coolant residue if necessary.
    • Loss of coolant greater than 1 L requires coolant vacuum fill.
  49. Remove the coolant drain container from underneath the vehicle.
  50. Install the rear skid plate. See Skid Plate - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  51. Install the rear stabilizer bar. See Rear Stabilizer Bar and Links - Stabar - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  52. Install the RH side subframe harness clip to the body.
  53. Engage the locking tab, then connect the RH side subframe harness connector.
  54. Install the bolt that attaches the RDU ground strap to the body.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Socket 1/4in Dr. 12pt. Deep x 10mm
  55. Remove the S-hook, then install new bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear caliper to the LH rear knuckle.
    83 Nm (61.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • E18 Torx Low Profile Socket
  56. Remove the S-hook, then install new bolts (x2) that attach the RH rear caliper to the RH rear knuckle.
    83 Nm (61.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • E18 Torx Low Profile Socket
  57. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH rear brake rotor to the hub.
    Note
    The fastener type may vary on newer vehicles.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • SOCKET, 1/4" DR., DEEP, MAGNETIC, 10MM
    • SKT, 1/4" DR, HEX BIT, T30 TORX
  58. Install the hub jack adapter onto the LH rear hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts (x5).
  59. Use an underhoist stand to support the hub jack adapter.
  60. Choose one of the following methods to set the rear suspension to ride height:
    1. Direct Measurement: Measure the distance between the bottom of the quarter panel and the center of the rear axle to make sure that the rear suspension is set to ride height. The distance should measure 428 mm.
    2. Use the Ride Height Measurement Tool (if equipped):
      1. Install the ride height measurement tool onto the LH rear hub jack adapter.
      2. Adjust the level to center the bubble within the reference marks, slide the movable cover to align the "MY REAR" marking, ensure the arrow on the cover matches the arrow on the scale, then securely tighten the sliding cover bolt.
      3. Adjust the under-hoist stand height, and use the sliding cover to extend the rod until it contacts the fender garnish.
  61. Tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear damper to the LH rear lower aft link, and then mark the bolt and nut with a paint pen.
    115 Nm (84.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  62. Tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear upper aft link to the subframe. Mark the bolt with a paint pen.
    134 Nm (98.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm combination wrench
    • 21 mm socket
  63. Tighten the bolt that attaches the LH rear lower aft link to the rear subframe, and then mark the bolt and nut with a paint pen.
    115 Nm (84.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip

    • 21 mm socket
    • 21 mm combination wrench
  64. Tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear toe link to the subframe. Mark the bolt with a paint pen.
    85 Nm (62.7 lbs-ft)

    • 18 mm deep socket
    • 18mm 12pt combination wrench
  65. Tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear upper fore link to the subframe, and then mark the bolt and nut with a paint pen.
    84 Nm (61.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm combination wrench
    • 18 mm socket
  66. Tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear lower fore link to the subframe. Mark the bolt with a paint pen.
    76 Nm (56.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm socket
  67. Remove the underhoist stand from underneath the LH rear suspension.
  68. Remove the lug nuts (x5) that attach the hub jack adapter, and then remove the hub jack adapter from the vehicle.
  69. Install the bolt that attaches the LH rear brake rotor to the hub.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)
    Note
    The fastener type may vary on newer vehicles.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • SOCKET, 1/4" DR., DEEP, MAGNETIC, 10MM
    • SKT, 1/4" DR, HEX BIT, T30 TORX
  70. Repeat from step 57 to step 69 for the RH side.
  71. Remove the spring compressor from the LH and RH rear coil springs.
  72. Install the LH and RH rear suspension covers. See Rear Suspension Cover - LH (Remove and Replace).
  73. Install the rear fascia diffuser. See Diffuser - Rear Fascia (Remove and Replace).
  74. Install the LH and RH rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  75. Install the 2nd row seat cushion. See Seat Cushion - 2nd Row (Remove and Replace).
  76. Remove the coolant bottle cap.
  77. Connect the LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect) (Modify).
  78. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
  79. On the touchscreen, tap the Service Mode "wrench" (at the bottom of the touchscreen UI), and then tap Thermal > Actions > Stop Thermal Fill/Drain, select Run to start the routine, and allow the routine to complete.
  80. On the touchscreen, tap the Service Mode "wrench" (at the bottom of the touchscreen UI), and then tap Thermal > Coolant System > Coolant Purge Start, select Run to start the routine, and allow the routine to complete.
    Note
    Make sure vehicle is not in Drive, shifting the vehicle into Drive will stop this routine. The test will last approximately 10 mins. The test will vary speeds from 3500-6500 RPM (idle speed = ~1500 RPM) and actuate the valve between series and parallel. If speed hovers at 7000 RPM, it indicates the pump is air locked, perform the vacuum fill again. Continue to add coolant and purge until the coolant level reaches between the NOM and MAX Lines on the bottle.
  81. On the touchscreen, tap the Service Mode "wrench" (at the bottom of the touchscreen UI), and then tap Chassis > Brakes > EPB Service Mode, select Both in the EPB Selection dropping list, and select Stop in the Action Selection dropping list. Click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
    Note
    The EPB Selection field can also be selected as Left/Right as needed
  82. Exit Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  83. Inspect coolant level and top off as necessary.
    Note
    • Ensure that fluid level is at Max line.
    • Coolant loss greater than 1 L will require vacuum fill.
  84. Install the coolant bottle cap.
  85. Install the HEPA filter or cowl assembly. See HEPA Filter Assembly (Remove and Replace) or Cowl Assembly - non-HEPA (Model Y Standard) (Remove and Install).
  86. Move both LH and RH front seats to their original positions.
  87. Raise all four window and close all four doors.
  88. Remove the vehicle from the lift.
  89. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
