Battery Chiller and expansion valve Assembly (Remove and Replace)

Warning
If the 12V power supply is disconnected, do not attempt to open any doors with door glass in closed position. Failure to follow this instruction could result in door glass shatter.

Note
Before disconnecting the 12V power supply, ensure that the driver’s door window is fully open. Failure to follow this instruction could result in vehicle lockout.

Removal

  1. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  2. Recover refrigerant from the vehicle. See A/C Refrigerant Recovery and Recharge (Remove and Replace).
  3. Disconnect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power .
  4. Gain access to the battery chiller and expansion valve assembly:
    • Vehicles built through April 10, 2016: Remove the front aeroshield (refer to procedure). Continue this procedure working below the vehicle.
    • Vehicles built after April 10, 2016: Remove the underhood storage unit (refer to procedure). Continue this procedure working in the underhood area.
  5. Disconnect the expansion valve electrical connector.
  6. Remove the nut that secures the air conditioning pipe to the expansion valve.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm deep socket
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
  7. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the expansion valve to the chiller, and then remove the expansion valve.

    Note
    Collect and discard the o-rings.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 3 mm socket
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver

Installation

  1. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the expansion valve to the chiller.
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)

    Note
    Replace the o-rings with new ones.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 3 mm socket
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
  2. Install the nut that secures the air conditioning pipe to the expansion valve.
    12 Nm (8.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • 10 mm deep socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  3. Connect the expansion valve electrical connector.
  4. Recharge the refrigerant. See A/C Refrigerant Recovery and Recharge (Remove and Replace).
  5. Cover the battery chiller and expansion valve assembly:
    • Vehicles built through April 10, 2016: Install the front aeroshield (refer to procedure). Continue this procedure working below the vehicle.
    • Vehicles built after April 10, 2016: Install the underhood storage unit (refer to procedure). Continue this procedure working in the underhood area.
  6. Connect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power .
  7. Install the HEPA filter outlet duct. See Duct - HEPA Filter - Outlet (Remove and Replace).
  8. Verify proper operation of the air conditioning system.
  9. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
