Gearbox Fluid - Large Rear Drive Unit (Remove and Replace)

Warning
If the vehicle has air suspension, activate "Jack" mode on the touchscreen before raising and supporting the vehicle.
  • 2025-11-06: Added service tooling for drain/fill plug.

Drain & Refill

  1. Raise and support the vehicle (refer to procedure).
    Warning
    Do not work on an incorrectly supported vehicle.
  2. Remove the mid aero shield (refer to procedure).
    Note
    The fluid should only be drained when the transmission is warm.
    Warning
    Be careful when draining the fluid; the fluid can be very hot.
  3. Position a container to collect the fluid.
  4. Clean the area around the filler plug.
  5. Remove the filler plug.
    Note
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Ratchet 3/8in Dr Flex Head
    • Skt, 3/8" Dr, Hex Bit, Metric, 8 mm
  6. Remove the drain plug and allow the liquid to drain into the container.
    Note
    Allow the fluid to drain completely before continuing this procedure.
  7. Clean and install the drain plug (torque 28 Nm).
  8. Fill the drive unit with the correct amount of proper fluid:
    CAUTION
    Do not fill to the bottom of the filler plug opening. Use exactly the specified amount of fluid.
  9. Install the filler plug (torque 28 Nm).
  10. Install the mid aero shield.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
