Steering Wheel (Remove and Replace)

CAUTION
Supplemental
Restraint System (SRS) components can be hazardous if not serviced and handled
correctly. See Air Bag and Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) Precautions
CAUTION
In the event of an
airbag or seatbelt pretensioner deployment, certain components must be replaced, and
other components must be inspected for damage. Refer to the Collision Repair
Manual for a specific list of items that must be inspected and
replaced.
Removal
- Remove the driver's air bag (refer to procedure).
- Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels point straight ahead.

Use a 10 mm hex socket to remove and discard the patch bolt that secures the steering wheel to the column (torque 80 Nm).

Before removing the steering wheel, mark the steering wheel relative position to the column.
NoteTake note of the elongated splines on the upper and lower center of the steering wheel. Mark the steering column shaft relative to the indicated steering wheel splines.

Remove the steering wheel from the vehicle.
CAUTIONDo not turn the clockspring when removing the steering wheel.
- Tape the clockspring to prevent rotation. Do not allow the clockspring to rotate.
Installation
- Remove the tape from the clockspring.

Match the elongated splines with the marks that were made to the steering column, and then install the new steering wheel.
NoteWhen performed correctly, toe adjustment is not necessary.

Use a 10 mm hex socket to install a new patch bolt that secures the steering wheel to the column (torque 80 Nm).
- Install the driver's air bag (refer to procedure).
