Front Applique - Panoramic Roof - 2nd Generation (Remove and Replace)

CAUTION
For Europe only: Only technicians who have been trained in working with diisocyanates and have completed all required certification courses are permitted to perform procedures using urethane and other products containing diisocyanates. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when working with products containing diisocyanates.

Removal

  1. Open the panoramic roof.
  2. Move both front seats forward as far as possible.
  3. Apply painter's tape to protect the external bodywork and internal trim adjacent to the front windshield.
  4. Place suitable covers over the remaining paint and bodywork.
  5. Remove and discard the front screws (x2) from the sliding glass.
  6. Slide the LH and RH front links forward as far as they can go to keep the wind deflector out of the way during applique removal and installation.

    CAUTION
    Place a clean towel under the sliding glass to protect the fixed glass.
  7. Remove the LH side applique (refer to procedure).
  8. Remove the RH side applique.
  9. Apply painter's tape to the painted surfaces of the vehicle next to the front applique.
  10. Use a plastic tool to pry out the rear seal on one side, and then pull out the rest of the rear seal.

    CAUTION
    Take care not to damage the seal during removal.
  11. If the applique is equipped with tabs at the rear corners, use a suitable cutting tool to cut off the tabs.

    Note
    The tabs help hold the corners flush with the body while the adhesive cures during assembly at the factory. These tabs are not necessary for reinstallation.
  12. Remove the screws (x6) at the rear of the applique that secure the applique to the roof frame (torque 1 Nm).
  13. Use a hydroblade tool to carefully cut through the adhesive on the sides and front of the applique.

    Only use cleaning agents and solvents in a well-ventilated area.

    CAUTION
    Take care not to damage component(s).
    Tip: Insert a wedge between the applique and the roof frame and lift the applique up slightly to make cutting through the adhesive easier.
  14. Remove the front applique and place it on a suitable stand.

Installation

  1. Use a scraping tool to remove the majority of the adhesive from the body, leaving a smooth layer of the original adhesive approximately 1 mm thick or less to aid assembly.
  2. Remove all existing butyl patches and replace them with new ones.
  3. Vacuum any debris from the body.
  4. Test fit the applique.
  5. If equipped with tabs, use a suitable cutting tool to trim the portion of the tab that extends beyond the gap between the applique and the pano roof frame (highlighted in the image shown).

  6. Wipe all of the sealing surfaces with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or with alcohol wipes.
  7. Apply primer to all adhesive paths on the body and the applique, and on any bare metal on the body opening.

    Check the expiration date of the primer and adhesive before use.

    CAUTION
    Check the primer and adhesive packaging for the appropriate working times for each product. Prepare the necessary tools and work environment so that the frame can be installed within the specified working times.

    Note
    The procedures requires approximately [x] tubes of adhesive.
  8. Assemble the adhesive applicator.
  9. Cut the tip of the adhesive applicator so that it will produce a bead 8 mm (5/16 in) wide and 14 mm (9/16 in) high.
  10. Apply adhesive to the vehicle body in the path shown.
  11. With assistance, slide the front of the applique under the top edge of the windshield.
  12. Install the screws (x6) that secure the rear of the applique to the roof frame (torque 1 Nm).

    CAUTION
    Be careful not to cross-thread or over-torque the screws.
  13. Apply suitable tape or weights (such as sand bags) to secure the applique, especially the back corners, while the adhesive cures. Continue to the next step.

    Make sure that the corners of the applique are flush with the body.
  14. Install the front applique seal by pressing it into the applique, starting from one of the ends.

    Use P-80 Emulsion if the seal does not easily go in all the way.
  15. Clean off any excess adhesive that was extruded from the joint.
  16. Install the side appliques.
  17. Reattach the LH and RH front links to the sliding glass using new screws (torque 5 Nm).
  18. Move the front seats back to their original positions.
  19. Close the panoramic roof.
  20. Remove the painter's tape or weights from the vehicle after the adhesive has cured.
